Magic Johnson's decision to step down as Los Angeles Lakers president of basketball operations came out of nowhere, and it is sending shockwaves throughout the NBA.

Not only did Johnson's announcement catch fans and the media by surprise, he apparently didn't tell anyone in the organization either, according to Dan Woike of The Los Angeles Times.

Magic Johnson didn't tell team owner Jeanie Buss, and he didn't inform general manager Rob Pelinka either. It's shocking news, as it's unfathomable to think Johnson would make such a massive call without informing anybody.

The move puts both Buss and Pelinka in a really tough spot. Johnson and Pelinka were brought in as a duo and were supposed to lead the Lakers back to glory. They landed LeBron James in free agency, but things went all downhill from there.

The Lakers just can't seem to stay out of their own way, and this is another big setback for the team. They have a huge offseason ahead of them, and now have this cloud of uncertainty hanging over them. Luke Walton seemed like a lock to get fired before this news, but this now changes everything.

It's plausible that Walton could hang onto his job, and it's anyone's guess what will happen to Rob Pelinka.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, Johnson was apparently turned off by the time commitment required by the job, adding that he was “never fully committed to the job.”

Since he announced the decision without telling Jeanie Buss, the Lakers obviously have no contingency plan prepared. The team will be under massive pressure to land Anthony Davis or another marquee player this offseason, and this certainly won't help.
