Magic Johnson says LeBron James signed with the Los Angeles Lakers “knowing I was here” and that the four-time MVP can still “run things by me.”
Johnson is no longer the president of the Lakers, so he can't be in free agent meetings this summer. The Hall of Famer, though, is willing to help the franchise anyway he possibly can.
James was open about how he felt when Johnson resigned from his post near the end of the 2018-19 season. Reports surfaced on Friday that Lakers free agent target Kawhi Leonard wants to meet with Johnson during the free agency process. NBA rules prohibit Johnson from attending the meetings, but Magic and Kawhi can still talk over the phone or outside of the free agent meeting.
James signed a four-year deal with the Lakers. He meant with Johnson at his LA house for multiple hours. The two legends talked about what it was going to take to get the franchise back to prominence. That's why LeBron was confused when Johnson stepped down from his post.
LA was able to acquire Anthony Davis from the New Orleans Pelicans and they supposedly have a strong chance at landing Leonard. It looks like James and Johnson's master plan is almost complete, expect Magic isn't part of the Lakers anymore.
