Both Julius Randle and Jordan Clarkson are not oblivious of the trade rumors that have been swirling around them. With the Los Angeles Lakers eyeing to lure big fishes to their team in next year’s free agency, the team feels that they should make extra salary cap space to accommodate the likes of LeBron James and Paul George, two of the top soon-to-be free agents. One way the Lakers could do that is by clearing some salary cap space.
According to Tania Ganguli of the Los Angeles Times, Randle and Clarkson seem to be the prime candidates to be moved before the trade deadline likely in order to give the Lakers a favorable angle, financially speaking, at the end of this season.
Randle’s situation is worth watching, though. The Lakers would love to trade him if they could, and Jordan Clarkson fits in that category too. Both players know they have been offered in trades by the Lakers, and they’re handling it in different ways.
The Lakers are currently over the salary cap with an active payroll of $102,238,687. Randle is also about to turn into a free agent next year, but the Lakers are unlikely to give him an offer that would satisfy him since he’s not a top priority. As for Clarkson, he is still due to earn $25.9 million until 2020, and if the Lakers could find a trade partner that would net Los Angeles perhaps some future picks and at least a player on an expiring contract, then that might just be an opportunity too tempting for them to pass up on.
Plenty of things could happen before this season concludes, and interesting developments appear to be in the works for the Lakers. Stay tuned.
