Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia has received some flak after deciding to make his team practice outdoors and in the snow, but during Friday’s press conference, he tried to explain the logic behind his decision, per Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk.

Patricia began his press conference today with a prepared statement about why he decided to have his team practice outdoors on a cold, snowy day, stating that he thinks players benefit from having to focus on their footwork.

“Mud, snow, loose grass, whatever the case may be, focuses most of the skill players to keep their feet underneath them and play technically sound,” Patricia said.

It’s understandable why many wondered why Patricia would pull such a move, as the Lions are not scheduled to play outdoors any time soon. After all, all of the team’s next four games are going to be held indoors.

But apart from the explanation he just gave, Patricia probably just wanted to shake things up for his Lions, who have lost each of their last three contests, including last’s week’s 34-22 defeat at the hands of the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field.

Up ahead for Matt Patricia and the 5-6 Lions is a date with the Carolina Panthers this weekend at home.
