The Louisville Cardinals team endured a difficult 2021-2022 campaign that saw them miss out on March Madness altogether. They had entered the season with fairly high expectations which were not met. The school wants to avoid another disappointing basketball season next year so they recently announced a move which should provide them with the best opportunity to win in 2022-2023.

The Cardinals are expected to announce Kenny Payne as the new head coach on Friday, per Jeff Goodman on Twitter.

Payne has been a part of the Knicks organization over the past couple of years. His previous coaching experience includes assisting at Kentucky and Oregon. Working under the great John Calipari certainly should play a role in how Payne attacks this new head coaching gig. Payne also played his college basketball at Louisville which makes him a natural fit for the position.

Payne is 6'8 and played down low during his time in college, so his strength is working with big men in the post. He should be able to get the most out of the Cardinals forwards and centers moving forward. He currently serves as an assistant coach in New York with the Knicks. He is someone who was a candidate for potential NBA head coaching vacancies, but Payne did not want to pass up the opportunity to take over coaching duties at his alma mater.

It should be noted that the board must still approve the hire. But sources have said that is simply basic procedure and Payne will indeed become the next Louisville head coach. He will be officially announced on Friday morning.
