The possibility of Orlando Magic duo Aaron Gordon and Elfrid Payton receiving contract extensions before next week’s Oct. 16 deadline does not seem likely, the Orlando Sentinel’s Josh Robbins reports.

Although Gordon’s and Payton’s situations could change, it seems unlikely that the Magic will reach extension agreements with either Gordon or Payton before Monday’s deadline.

Jeff Weltman and John Hammond, hired in May to lead the Magic’s basketball operations department, have no prior histories with Gordon or Payton and limited firsthand knowledge of Gordon or Payton so far. And Weltman, the new president of basketball operations, has indicated he and Hammond intend to use the season ahead to evaluate the entire roster.

Aaron Gordon and Elfrid Payton were acquired by the previous Magic front office led by Rob Hennigan. Gordon was the No. 4 pick in the 2014 draft, while the Magic traded the rights to Dario Saric to the Philadelphia 76ers for Payton, who was picked No. 10 in the same year.

Neither has blossomed into an All-Star-caliber player through their first three years in the league, in part due to their failure to develop a consistent jump shot. However, both are coming off their best seasons to date last year. Gordon averaged 12.7 points and 5.1 rebounds, while Payton had 12.8 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 6.5 assists, per game along with five triple-doubles.

The Magic will still have the upper hand in re-signing them in restricted free agency next year, but they should get stiff competition from other potential suitors if the two players break out this season.
