Gary Neville gets slammed over bold Cristiano Ronaldo vs. Lionel Messi take
Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville gets blasted by his co-pundit Jamie Carragher over a comment on the Cristiano Ronaldo vs. Lionel Messi debate.
Things got a bit intense between Monday Night Football hosts Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher after the pair weighed in on the subject—who would be the best player to bring off the bench to win a match between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi?
According to Neville, he’d go for Manchester United returnee Ronaldo, whom he hailed as the “greatest” to ever grace the pitch and the “most complete player” there is.
Carragher, on the other hand, barged in and refuted Neville’s analysis, stressing that Messi has proven that he is superior to Ronaldo whether off the bench or not.
“Nobody’s not a fan of [Cristiano] Ronaldo,” Carragher told Neville via The Mirror. “Ronaldo is not the greatest player of all time. His mate here is. [Messi]. You talk about who you’d want coming off the bench, Messi has scored twice as many goals from the bench as Ronaldo has ever scored.”
“That’s ridiculous what you say about him coming off the bench because he can score different types of goals,” he added. “It doesn’t matter. Even if Messi scores more with his left foot, and the stats prove he scores more goals than Ronaldo.”
Further backing his assessment, Carragher concluded that throughout his illustrious career, Messi has proven that he’s a cut above the rest and Neville may have just gotten “carried away” by the hype of Manchester United “fanfare.”
“Messi takes you to a place where you can’t believe what you’re seeing,” the pundit pointed out. “Ronaldo does things other players can do.”
“I think there’s been a lot of fanfare in terms of United and best players, and I think you [Neville] got a bit carried away,” he continued.
