On Monday night, the Toronto Maple Leafs continued their stellar play. They won their sixth straight game, defeating the Carolina Hurricanes 4-3 in overtime. During the game, Maple Leafs superstar Auston Matthews scored his 30th and 31st goal. However, during the third period he was forced to leave the game following a hit along the boards. He did not return to the game.

Matthews was playing on a quick turnaround as the NHL's All-Star Game was Saturday night in Las Vegas, Nevada.

With under a minute remaining in the third, Matthews got mixed up with Hurricanes winger Nino Neiderreiter. He then crashed into the boards, with his head making contract. He was seen holding his head after the collision and went to the dressing room.

On Tuesday, Maple Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe provided an update on Matthews. Toronto fans can apparently breath a sigh of relief.

As noted by TSN's Mark Masters, Matthews “came in today feeling pretty good so it's a really good sign. Obviously, for his status in terms of practicing tomorrow, we'll see how he comes in, but today was a very good day.” He was held out of practice Tuesday but will be re-evaluated on Wednesday.

Matthews is in the midst of arguably his best season as a pro. He has 31 goals and 22 assists for 53 points. His 31 goals are the third most in the NHL behind only Chris Kreider and Leon Draisaitl. Matthews set his career high with 47 goals two seasons ago. He has only played 40 games this season, so his goals-per-game average is at an all-time high.
