The Toronto Maple Leafs were thought to be the favorite to land Marc-Andre Fleury prior to the NHL trade deadline. Toronto's starting goalie Jack Campbell has missed the last couple weeks with a rib injury. Even though he is back on the ice, there is still no timetable for his return. Therefore, the Maple Leafs were in need of some help in net. Fleury ended up being traded to the Minnesota Wild, leaving Toronto with veteran Petr Mrazek and Erik Kallgren.

Mrazek had played so poorly of late, the Maple Leafs placed on waivers Sunday. Mrazek cleared waivers and Toronto re-claimed him, with the hopes that the experience was a wake-up call for the veteran.

Toronto head coach Sheldon Keefe addressed Mrazek's situation after practice Tuesday, according to NHL.com reporter Mike Zeisberger.

“It's a bit of a shock to an established NHL player that goes on waivers and when you clear, it should be even more of a shock that you have not been nearly good enough… It's an opportunity for him to really get to work now, it is real, and we need him to be better.”

Mrazek has allowed 17 goals over his last four starts, with at least four in every game. The occasional start by Kallgren has not been any better, leaving the Maple Leafs falling seven points behind division leader Florida Panthers. The are currently third in the division, barely holding that spot against a charging Boston Bruins team on their heels. Only the top three teams are guaranteed a spot in the playoffs, with two wild card spots available after that.
