In their first regular season game together, Martellus Bennett reaped the benefits of play with the legendary Tom Brady.

Brady was essentially flawless in the first game back following his Deflategate suspension, throwing for over 400 yards and three touchdowns. All three were caught by Bennett, a career-high for the first-year Patriot.

Through five weeks, Bennett is quite satisfied with his decision to play for New England. From his Twitter account:

Playing for the Patriots has been a dream come true. Proud to wear the Red. Silver. And Blue looks great with my skin complexion btw…

It initially appeared that Bennett's day would be over before it even started. On the first drive of the game, he went down with an ankle injury.

Marteullus was able to gut it out, and he came up huge for his team. From Mike Petraglia of WEEI.com:

“You lay down for a second and feel sorry for yourself, but then you remember all of the people who are counting on you and you just kind of find a way to suck it up and go out there and play for those guys,” Bennett said. “I didn’t want to let my teammates down. A lot of stuff we worked on in practice so I had to figure out a way to get back out there and play with my teammates.”

Bennett also discussed how the long hours working with Brady over the summer have paid dividends with their immediate chemistry on the field:

“Communication is huge. Just knowing what he expects, what he wants, and try to do that correctly,” Bennett said. “That’s what it’s really about. There is a lot of stuff that Tom communicated earlier in the summer during practice and one of them came up on the second touchdown.”
