Maryland football co-offensive coordinator Kevin Sumlin finds himself in trouble with the law after getting arrested and charged with driving under the influence over the weekend in Florida, according to a police report from Hillsborough County (h/t Taylor Lyons of DBK News).

The report also said that Sumlin rejected a breathalyzer test. As a result, his driver's license has been suspended for a year. Sumlin, who is perhaps best known for being a former head coach of the Texas A&M Aggies during the Johnny Manziel era, pleaded guilty to a charge that has a potential maximum sentence of six months of imprisonment.

This is certainly not a welcome development for Maryland football, which hired Sumlin last February to be part of their coaching staff. Maryland football did not have a game over the weekend, as the Terrapins are on a bye, but they are on a two-game losing skid following defeats at the hands of the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Illinois Fighting Illini.

Before taking his coaching talents to Maryland, Sumlin had a stint with the Houston Gamblers in the USFL. After his time in College Station, Sumlin went to the Pac-12 and became head coach of the Arizona Wildcats from 2018 to 2022.

Sumlin is likely not going to be with Maryland football for the Terrapins' date this coming weekend against the Northwestern Wildcats on the road. There is also the likelihood of Maryland parting ways with him, depending on the decision the program will make.
