The Dallas Mavericks poured in 42 points in the first quarter of their game against the Charlotte Hornets on Wednesday night, and in doing so, they drained a franchise-record 10 3-pointers.
According to ESPN Stats & Info, the Mavs are just one triple away from tying the current NBA record for triples made in a quarter. Three of the 3-pointers were made by rookie Luka Doncic, who has taken the league by storm this season.
Expected by many to be a sure-fire lottery team finishing at the bottom of the Western Conference standings, the Mavs have actually been a surprisingly respectable ballclub this season. Entering Wedneday's showdown with the Hornets, they have a 17-19 record.
Of course, the Mavs currently find themselves outside the Western Conference playoff picture, but the fact that they are even in the race at this point of the year is a relatively impressive feat for them.
Dallas has missed the playoffs two years in a row now, marking the first time the Mavs have missed the postseason in back-to-back years since 2000.
Outside of the 2012-13 campaign, the Mavs made the playoffs every year between 2000-01 and 2015-16, making two NBA Finals and winning the championship in 2011 when they bested LeBron James and the Miami Heat in six games behind a legendary performance from Dirk Nowitzki.
Dallas has actually not won a playoff series since that finals victory over the Heat, losing in the first round for three straight seasons between the 2013-14 and 2015-16 campaigns.
