Dallas Mavericks rookie point guard Dennis Smith Jr. became the youngest point guard to dish out at least 10 assists in his NBA debut against the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday, according to Alex Kennedy of HoopsHype.

The 19-year-old also became the youngest to record a points/assists double-double (per Bobby Karalla of Mavs.com) after netting 16 points in the 117-111 loss. The second-youngest is former NBA champion Jason Kidd. Smith shot a clean 6-of-12 from the floor including 1-of-4 from deep and 3-of-4 from the stripe, racking up only three turnovers on his debut.

Smith has been the hype of the offseason after a brilliant Summer League that earned the Mavs the championship over the Detroit Pistons as part of the Orlando Summer League, then leading his team to a 5-1 record in the Las Vegas Summer League later that month.

A product of North Carolina State, Smith was picked with the ninth overall pick — one that has been called a dark horse pick to win the Rookie of the Year award, despite the presence of talents like Ben Simmons and Lonzo Ball.

The young rookie has gotten the keys to the point guard position in his very first year in the league, as the franchise hopes he can turn into the next cornerstone player moving forward.
