Take a look at Dirk Nowitzki’s Basketball Reference page and you’ll see a trio of the Dallas Mavericks star’s nicknames: Dirty, Tall Baller from the G, German Race Car.

However, that list is missing one nickname, one that was given to him by former teammate and current Mavs assistant coach Darrell Armstrong and is apparently his favorite nickname of all time: the big mummy.

It’s no secret to anyone who’s watched Nowitzki, who is nearly 40 years old and is heading into season 20 in the NBA, that the German is a shell of his old self physically. He suffered an Achilles injury last season which was a big factor in him missing 28 games. All the miles on his body have really taken a toll on his mobility, and he has become a major liability on the defensive end.

However, it’s a testament to Nowitzki’s abilities that he remains a key part of the Mavs offense despite his clear physical limitations. While his true shooting percentage dipped to 53 percent, his lowest since his rookie year, he still gets a lot of respect and attention from opposing defenses which open things up for his teammates.

And after signing a new two-year deal this offseason, the big mummy remains determined to trudge through another season or two with the Mavs.
