Mavs star Luka Doncic turned his ankle during Thursday's practice session with the team, head coach Rick Carlisle revealed.

Doncic's status for Friday night's game against the Houston Rockets is still uncertain:

Doncic is enjoying a fine season with the Mavs — his second in the NBA. In 43 appearances, the Slovenian-born star has racked up averages of 28.8 points on 46.4 percent shooting from the field (32.1 percent from beyond the arc), 9.5 rebounds, 8.7 assists and a steal in 32.8 minutes per outing. The phenom was voted in as a starter for the 2020 NBA All-Star Game.

News of Luka Doncic's ankle sprain is a tough blow for the Mavs, who are currently holding a 29-18 overall record and sitting in the No. 5 slot in the Western Conference. The team will likely take a cautious approach with the injury. If Doncic is sidelined, players like Jalen Brunson, J.J. Barea and Seth Curry would likely see upticks in their usage rates.

The Mavs will be back in action on Friday night, when they'll face off against the Houston Rockets. Tip-off inside the Toyota Center is set for 7:30 p.m. ET, with ESPN having live broadcast coverage. The Rockets are also 29-18 on the season and holding the No. 6 seed in the West.

Dallas won the first matchup of the season, 137-123.
