Rick Carlisle stepped down as Dallas Mavericks head coach on Thursday in the latest shocking move during a chaotic week within the Mavs organization. President Donnie Nelson also just departed the franchise after a report from The Athletic dropped earlier in the week describing dysfunction in the front office and internal concern about Luka Doncic's future.

While Doncic is a big fan of Nelson, he apparently had some issues with Carlisle, which could have helped lead to his departure. ESPN's Tim MacMahon also brought up an old quote from Doncic that could hint at a top candidate to replace Carlisle:

Mosley joined Carlisle's coaching staff in 2014 and has paid his dues as an assistant coach. If Doncic likes him that much, it wouldn't be a surprise if Mosley is hired to be the next head coach.

However, Mavs owner Mark Cuban wants to first hire a new president of basketball operations to replace Nelson before a new head coach is hired, according to Marc Stein of The New York Times. That new top executive will want to lead a coaching search and not come into a situation with a coach forced on him.

The new exec will also want to make sure he's not being undermined in the front office, which is what seemed to happen with Nelson. The Athletic report called out Haralabos Voulgaris as something of a “shadow GM” who has been entrusted by Cuban to play a key role in major decisions. It's unclear if Voulgaris will be back with the franchise.

The Mavs have a lot to clean up after a first-round series loss to the Los Angeles Clippers. Dallas blew a 2-0 series lead and lost in seven games, and now major changes must be made across the organization to build something more stable around Doncic.
