The Dallas Mavericks are already starting to groom 20-year old Luka Doncic as the face of the franchise. Head coach Rick Carlisle plans to work with him throughout the summer.

In an interview with The Dallas Morning News, Carlisle revealed he will use this summer to constantly work with Doncic and the rest of the Mavs' young players, but he didn't give any specific dates for those workouts in order to avoid media attention.

“Well, there will be a period of rest now. He'll be back in Dallas for a week in May and a week in June with our other young guys to do a developmental week twice. And I'm going to go to Slovenia at a certain point – I don't want to advertise when it is because I don't want it to be a media circus – to get in the gym with him along with one of our other staff guys.”

Carlisle added that although it is important for Luka Doncic to be able to have enough rest, he also needs to understand that this summer will also be about working to improve his game for next season.

“Look, we've got to set the tone for the importance of this summer for him. It's got to be the right amount of rest, and the right amount of hard work. He hasn't had this long an offseason in any time in recent years. All the EuroLeague stuff has been going well into June, and he's always been on one of the good teams. And so every day is going to be a day where he's got to decide – what is it today? What is it today to move to tomorrow and keep getting better?”

Doncic has been impressive for the Mavericks this season, but Carlisle believes that he can and will do better. The Mavs' coach is optimistic that Luka will approach this summer properly.

“If he approaches this summer the way that I believe he's going to, he's going to have a chance to keep moving his career upward and upward and upward.”

The Mavericks have high expectations next season, and Doncic will be the centerpiece of their campaign. Their team's success in the foreseeable future will highly depend on how good he will be. In Carlisle's eyes, Luka's ceiling is limitless.
