After falling to the Los Angeles Clippers in the opening round of the 2020 NBA Playoffs, 4-2, Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks are headed home. Will the Mavs' roster remain intact, or will the team be looking to make changes?

According to a report from ESPN's Tim MacMahon, the Mavs are not likely to make any significant changes — not right away, at least:

Sources said the Mavs aren't likely to make major roster changes right away, especially if Tim Hardaway Jr. picks up his $19 million player option as anticipated. One path for this offseason being pushed within the organization is to target veterans who have earned reputations for toughness and could be signed to short-term deals.

One area in which the Mavs could look to improve is defense. As MacMahon notes in his piece for ESPN, Dallas was 18th in the league in that department during the regular season. The Mavericks do have some young depth, such as Dorian Finney-Smith and Maxi Kleber, but is the team willing to wait for them to develop further?

Though they were sent home in the first round, many are viewing Dallas' run to the postseason as a success. They finished with the 7th seed in the Western Conference, then fought the Clippers hard in the first round. Injuries played a role in Dallas' downfall, including one to Kristaps Porzingis, who missed the final three games of the opening round series due to a lateral meniscus tear in his right knee. As of right now, it's not clear if the injury will require surgery.

Will the Mavs rely on The Zinger getting healthy and staying that way in the coming season, or will they be looking for some sort of an insurance policy? A reliable veteran at a reasonable rate, perhaps.

All things considered, Porzingis feels that the team is heading in the right direction:

“It's not an easy road,” Porzingis said earlier in the series, via ESPN. “Obviously, it takes a lot of experience. I haven't seen a team that it's smooth sailing all the way. … I believe we're heading in the right direction.”

The Mavs will likely be a favorite for next season, despite the fact that they were eliminated in the first round this year. Let's see what sort of moves the team makes in the offseason.
