The New York Mets still cannot free themselves from the reader injury bug. Max Scherzer, the star free agent they signed this offseason, is now heading to the injured reserve to join Jacob deGrom, the team's other superstar pitcher who has not yet played this season.

After Scherzer left his most recent start against the St. Louis Cardinals in the sixth inning, the Mets announced that Scherzer will likely miss at least a month due to a high-grade left oblique strain.

Scherzer didn't sound too worried when asked about the injury after the game, though that was before the severity of his injury was revealed. Now, he joins deGrom on the injured list and may not pitch for a while. Young starter Tylor Megill also remains out, leaving the Mets' pitching in trouble.

The Mets were getting a fantastic season from the 37-year-old superstar. Scherzer posted a 2.54 ERA with 59 strikeouts and only 6.5 hits per nine innings across 49.2 innings of work. It will now be up to Chris Bassitt, Carlos Carrasco and Taijuan Walker to anchor the starting rotation. New York will also need the very best from their bullpen, especially star closer Edwin Diaz and Drew Smith.

The Mets are tied for the most wins in the National League at 25 but will have a lot of adversity to overcome against a tough slate of opponents. They have lots of talent in the field and have a sizable, six-game lead in the NL East.
