Why The Mets Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Mets had a complete makeover from last year to this year. They are 33-37 this season and have won five straight heading into this series. Their bats have jumped up to average after struggling, while their pitching has struggled this season. Pete Alonso, Francisco Lindor, Starling Marte, and Brandon Nimmo have been solid behind the plate despite their struggles on offense. Luis Severino, Tylor Megill, and Jose Butto have been solid despite the staff struggling. The Mets have struggled this season, but they are playing better recently leading into this matchup.

The Mets are starting Luis Severino on the mound and he has a 4-2 record, a 3.12 ERA, and a 1.18 WHIP. Severino has allowed 33 runs on 62 hits with 30 walks and 60 strikeouts through 78 innings. In the 13 games that he has started, the Mets are 6-7. This is a favorable matchup because the Rangers offense has plummeted to the bottom half of the MLB. Severino has been a key piece for the Mets, so this should be an interesting matchup for him in Texas.

The Mets have not been great behind the, but have jumped into being an average offense. They have a .243 batting average after having a .238 batting average last season. Starling Marte, Pete Alonso, and Brandon Nimmo led the way in most batting categories this season. Marte leads the way in batting average at .281 and in total hits at 65. Alonso leads in home runs and RBI at 37. Finally, Nimmo leads in OBP at .351. This will be a difficult matchup against the Rangers and Lorenzen on the mound in this game.

Why The Rangers Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Rangers have been inconsistent since winning the World Series last year on their way to a 33-38 record. They have dipped in batting average and are in the bottom half of the MLB with their bats, while their pitching has also taken a dip and is now around the middle of the pack. This offense is led by sluggers Adolis Garcia, Marcus Semien, Corey Seager, and Josh Smith. This offense is loaded overall with talent. Their pitching needs to play better overall. Nathan Eovaldi has taken center stage on the mound this season, but Jon Gray and Michael Lorenzen have also been decent.

The Rangers are starting Michael Lorenzen on the mound and he has a 4-3 record, a 2.86 ERA, and a 1.18 WHIP. Through 66 innings this season, he has allowed 21 runs on 49 hits with 29 walks and 47 strikeouts. Lorenzen has started in 10 games and the Rangers are 4-7 in those games. Lorenzen has been solid on the mound this season in Texas. This is an interesting matchup against the Mets and their offense because it has consistently improved recently.

The Rangers' offense has taken a huge dip recently. They are 18th in team batting average at .238 after finishing as one of the best in the MLB with a .263 batting average last year. The offense is led by Marcus Semien, Corey Seager, and Josh Smith in most batting categories. Smith leads in batting average at .294 and in OBP at .384. Semien leads in RBI at 40 and in total hits at 75. Then, Seager in home runs at 14. The Rangers' offense can match up with anyone in the MLB, but they get a difficult matchup against Luis Severino on the mound for the Mets.

Final Mets-Rangers Prediction & Pick

This matchup comes down to pitching because both Severino for the Mets and Lorenzen for the Rangers have had good seasons so far. The Mets offense is playing better, but the Rangers offense is more talented. Expect this to be very close and the Rangers should cover and potentially win back home, despite the Mets coming into this game red-hot.
