Miley is speaking out about her relationship with her father Billy Ray Cyrus after the two have been estranged for some time. Miley spoke about how her father's career helped her succeed on her own.
“He has a relationship and a foot on the ground to the real and to nature and he always did, even when he was super famous,” Miley said of the country star to Netflix's My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman. “I'm grateful for being able to watch him ahead of me. He's almost given me this map. And there's a map of what to do and what not to do, and he's guided me on both.
“I also inherited the narcissism from my father,” she added.
There has been a rumored conflict in the Cyrus family including between Miley and Billy Ray. However, the “Flowers” singer still noted that she is appreciative of the support both her parents have given her over the years.
“Without my dad, I know — I mean, not just literally I wouldn't be sitting in this chair, I wouldn't exist — but I would not, who I am as a person, it wouldn't exist. Because my dad, as a creative and as an artist in the way that his brain works, has always made me feel safer in my own mind because we're very similar in our ideas,” she continued. “So I think a lot of his perspective on reality and on life, I've inherited from him, more so than the way that I was raised — which really, my mom raised me.”
“Honestly, my mom is my hero,” Miley said of her mother Tish Cyrus.
Miley Cyrus Doubles Down On Billy Ray Cyrus Grammys Speech
Fans began to think that something was up between Miley and Billy Ray after she failed to thank him in her acceptance speech at the Grammys earlier this year. While some chalked it up to be a simple mistake, Miley doubled down on speech when she posted photos of her accepting the award and still did not thank her father.
“I had all the perfect things to say but none of them could come out in this moment of shock. I’m happy they didn’t… because (thankfully) prepared perfection just isn’t my story. Life is so much more exciting this way. [butterly emoji] Thank you @mariahcarey for being so iconic. MCxMC4EVR,” she wrote.
She then began to thank her mother, her half-sister Brandi, godmother Dolly Parton as well as her boyfriend and collaborators on the project. She notably left out her younger sister Noah and father Billy Ray seemingly taking sides.
“I celebrate my fans above all else,” she concluded. “No award means as much to me as the years we’ve spent together. You SAW me before this recognition. A day doesn’t pass that I don’t spend atleast a moment thanking heaven for sending me such supportive earth angels. I love you with my entire heart. To many more years together.”
Tish and Billy Ray got divorced in April 2022. In October 2022, Billy Ray got engaged to Firerose who he announced his divorce to earlier this week after seven months of marriage. As for Tish, she married Prison Break's Dominic Purcell in November 2022. Purcell allegedly had a relationship with Tish's youngest daughter Noah prior to Tish and him dating. Noah has since begun to “move on” from the drama but is not in contact with Purcell.
