Minecraft‘s Overworld is getting a vibrant new look, with the next big update called The Wild. Even though the second part of the Caves and Cliffs release has yet to drop in the game, Mojang Studios already made the announcement about The Wild at this year's Minecraft Live. While The Wild update will be smaller than its predecessor, several exciting changes are arriving next year. Here's what fans can look forward to for this 2022 release.

Wild, wild biomes

As the name suggests, The Wild will focus on freshening up the biomes in Minecraft. Mojang plans to add more details so that each area has a clearer identity and looks more natural and, well, wild. For example, the developer initially announced changes to the Deep Dark biome for the Caves and Cliffs update. Now, its release has been moved to The Wild update—and fans hope it will be well worth the wait.

In the last Minecraft Live, fans got a sneak peek into the Deep Dark. It looked quite plain, nothing more than an underground cave. But Mojang now revealed that the eerie subterranean biome is actually an extensive ruined civilization. The cave isn't just a cave, but several abandoned cities with abundant treasures waiting to be discovered.

Since Deep Dark's release has been pushed back, this also means that the introduction of the Warden will be delayed to The Wild update. Fans will have to wait a little longer before they can head beneath the ground to face the creepy cave monsters.

Another area that will get a renovation—or a rejuvenation—is the Birch Forest biome. In the current state of the game, Birch Forest appears as quite a boring, forgettable area. Now The Wild update will give Minecraft fans a more memorable forest biome. Players can expect to see taller trees, diverse flowers and shrubs, and wildlife spread out over a spacious landscape.

Mojang also revealed that a brand new biome is coming to the blocky sandbox. Called Mangrove Swamp, this area will introduce a new type of wood from mangrove trees. Players can also try out a new mud block for building mud bricks alongside boats with chests.

Frog friends are coming to Minecraft

And that's not all the new release has to offer. With The Wild update, a new frog mob will arrive in Minecraft—much to the excitement, or horror, of players around the world.

These creatures may be cold-blooded but they'll be a friendly, peaceful mob in the game. In the new swamp, the frogs grow from tadpoles and act just as how the real animals are expected to behave. Players will see them hopping on lily pads and catching fireflies for lunch.

Depending on the temperature of the area that it grows up in, the frogs will also show different colors, so it won't be limited to the usual greens or browns. Like symbolizing different species, each colored frog gets its own unique set of traits and antics. However, the developers have yet to decide what those specific features and personalities are.

One thing's for sure though: even if you're not a fan of these amphibians in real life, you'll have to admit they'll look quite cute in game. Also, who wouldn't love color variations? The Wild update sounds to be all about livening up the Overworld with a more detailed coat—and we're definitely all for keeping things interesting.

So that's what fans can expect when The Wild update arrives in Minecraft, though no set date has been specified yet. Which of these changes are you most excited for?
