The Minnesota Vikings wasted no time in signing members of their rookie class to contracts. With rookie minicamps around the corner, second-round tight end Irv Smith Jr. became the first Minnesota rookie to sign a contract, according to a tweet from ESPN's Adam Schefter.
He also is the highest-selected player to sign a rookie contract league-wide.
Smith is the eighth draft pick from the 2019 class to sign with the team. Those players include:
- TE Irv Smith, Jr., Alabama | Second Round, 50th overall
- RB Alexander Mattison, Boise State | Third Round, 102nd overall
- G Dru Samia, Oklahoma | Fourth Round, 114th overall
- LB Cameron Smith, Southern California | Fifth Round, 162nd overall
- S Marcus Epps, Wyoming | Sixth Round, 191st overall
- T Olisaemeka Udoh, Elon | Sixth Round, 193rd overall
- WR Dillon Mitchell, Oregon | Seventh Round, 239th overall
- WR Olabisi Johnson, Colorado State | Seventh Round, 247th overall
Rookies will participate in three days of practices and meetings with other players who have been invited to the team’s headquarters on a tryout basis. In recent years, Pro Bowl receiver Adam Thielen (2013) and Chad Beebe (last year) are among players who signed with the Vikings after they participated in minicamps on a tryout basis.
Smith was regarded as one of the top tight ends in this year’s class after a strong showing at Alabama. After Iowa’s T.J. Hockenson went to the Lions (No. 8 overall) and Noah Fant fell to the Broncos (No. 20), Smith stood out in a group that still included Washington’s Drew Sample, San Jose State’s Josh Oliver and Texas A&M’s Jace Sternberger.
