It's hard for MLB to do better than having the New York Yankees facing off against the Boston Red Sox in a one game, winner-take-all matchup in the AL Wild Card round.

Unfortunately, both the Yankees and the Red Sox will be without a key piece on Tuesday night.

J.D. Martinez suffered an ankle injury in the regular season finale on Sunday and, according to NESN, it happened in a really weird way.

Martinez’s injury was a fluky one. During the Red Sox’s regular season finale Sunday, Martinez tripped and sprained his ankle while jogging out to right field. He got looked at by the medical staff and actually stayed in the field for that half inning, but was pulled upon returning to the dugout.

The injury for the Yankees' DJ LeMahieu is a sports hernia and despite his plea to play against the Red Sox, manager Aaron Boone is holding him out, per MLB.com.

“He was willing to do whatever, if we would have wanted him to go out there,” Boone said. “I just feel like he’s too compromised to be able to play at a level close to what we would expect of DJ. In the end, I just don’t think that’s fair to him.”

Boone also noted if the Yankees are to advance to the ALDS, LeMahieu would miss that entire series as well.

Despite those two injuries, it is appointment television on Tuesday night as the Yankees and Red Sox play an AL Wild Card elimination game with the winner setting up a date with the Tampa Bay Rays.
