The New York Mets and Chicago Cubs are reportedly revisiting a possible trade for Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant.
Andy Martino of SNY.tv reported last month the two teams discussed a move centered around the 2016 National League MVP, but scrapped the talks even before the Mets acquired star shortstop Francisco Lindor.
However, Martino reported Thursday talks between the clubs regarding Kris Bryant's availability have begun again:
That was true at the time, but it turns out that the conversation wasn’t over. According to league sources, the Bryant talks have resumed since.
It’s unclear how likely a trade is. There have long been mixed indications. SNY’s Jim Duquette has recently reported that Chicago is more likely to hold on to Bryant until the July 31 trade deadline unless they were blown away by an offer.
Martino noted the Cubs have expressed some interest in utility man J.D. Davis, though the Mets are said to like his years of club control.
Kris Bryant's future in Chicago is a big unknown. The 29-year-old will be a free agent in 2022 and is coming off a career-worst .644 OPS this past season. Bryant is also owed $19.5 million in 2021, hardly a cheap sum for a player heading into a walk year.
Still, there is plenty of reason the former No. 2 overall pick would appeal to the Mets. Bryant trailed only Mike Trout and Mookie Betts in fWAR between 2015 and 2019. New York also seems generally interested in upgrading at the hot corner, as Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported the Mets had interest in free-agent third baseman Justin Turner.
