The MLB trade deadline is quickly picking up steam with only a few days left. The San Diego Padres and Tampa Bay Rays have already made moves, and the Oakland Athletics acquired Andrew Chafin from the Chicago Cubs. Speaking of the Cubs, their roster is set to look vastly different.
Kris Bryant and Craig Kimbrel are the obvious names headed out, and it appears that at least one team has had conversations regarding Anthony Rizzo, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN.
“…the Cubs have at least had preliminary conversations with Boston about a deal for Rizzo, according to sources, as Boston has the worst first-base production of any team in baseball this season.”
That would be something. The Red Sox have had a revolving door at first base and Rizzo would immediately provide a huge boost to that offense. Boston has been fighting all season with the Rays for first place in the American League East and could be active in the market with the MLB trade deadline approaching.
Bobby Dalbec and Danny Santana have spent time at first base, and it is no question that Rizzo is a major upgrade over any of those players. On the year, Rizzo has smacked 13 home runs and drove in 38 while batting .248.
Could a deal be done regarding Rizzo? As of now, all signs point to a Cubs' fire-sale, so maybe he departs by Friday's deadline as well.
