Despite the expectation of being mainstays at the bottom of the AL East this season, the Boston Red Sox have surprised many baseball fans and find themselves two games out of a playoff spot a week before the MLB trade deadline. It was widely anticipated that the Red Sox would be sellers this season, but their latest stretch could see them adding pieces this week, though not everyone on the roster is safe.
Outfielder Adam Duvall is a candidate to get moved by the Red Sox. Though it's been brief, he's enjoyed his time in Boston and hopes that he's not traded for the fifth time in his career and the fourth time at the deadline.
“Honestly, I’ve heard people talk, but I haven’t read anything,” Duvall said, according to Sean McAdam. “I try and stay away from it. Because there’s always going to be noise, there’s always going to be something distracting you. I truly believe that, you know what, I can show up today and help the team win. It’ll be a surprise to me if something happens. I really like this group of guys.”
Duvall broke out in a big way this season before a broken wrist sidelined him for two months. He has a .839 OPS with 20 extra-base hits and 27 RBIs in 39 games for the Red Sox.
The reasons behind Duvall's potential departure from Boston make sense. He is an expendable veteran with playoff experience that could appeal to a contending team. The Red Sox also have an abundance of outfield options, three of which are expected to be part of Boston's long-term future. That could leave Adam Duvall as the odd man out, meaning the Red Sox may not hesitate in using him in a trade for pitching help.
