Jose Iglesias is coming back to where his big league career started. The Red Sox announced the signing of Iglesias on Monday amid their COVID-19 outbreak that has left numerous infielders sidelined, specifically shortstop Xander Bogaerts.

Iglesias was signed by the Red Sox as an international free agent in 2008 and eventually made his MLB debut with the team in 2011. He's known for his impressive defense, but that hasn't exactly been the case this season. Iglesias was just released by the Los Angeles Angels and was having a rough year at shortstop. He committed 16 errors this season after making just 18 in the past three seasons combined. The Cuban also hit a mere .259, despite posting a .373 average with the Orioles in 2020.
Nevertheless, it's a fresh start and the Red Sox know what he's capable of. While he probably won't start when Bogaerts comes back, he will get innings for the time being. Since leaving Boston in 2013, Iglesias has played for the Tigers, Reds, Orioles, and Angels. If he can wake up offensively as well, it could be a nice addition to the Red Sox as they set their sights on a Wild Card spot.
Iglesias was activated by the team on Monday and should be available in their series opener against the AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays.
