Houston Astros star pitcher Gerrit Cole is set to be a free agent this offseason and will have a long list of suitors. One of those suitors could be the Chicago Cubs, according to Buster Olney of ESPN.
Cole will unquestionably be one of the most prized free agents on the market this winter, as he will be just 29 years old and has developed into one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball.
On the season, Cole has gone 15-5 with a 2.75 ERA, allowing 116 hits while striking out 238 batters over 163.2 innings of work, making the All-Star team as a result.
Cole was originally selected by the New York Yankees with the 28th overall pick of the 2008 MLB Draft, but the two sides could not come to terms on the deal. Then, three years later, he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates with the first overall selection.
He made his big-league debut in 2013, going 10-7 with a 3.22 ERA while surrendering 109 hits and fanning 100 hitters across 117.1 frames of action.
Cole proceeded to spend the first five years of his career with the Pirates, making an All-Star appearance in 2015 as a result of going 19-8 with a 2.60 ERA, giving up 183 hits and registering 202 punchouts through 208 innings.
He was then traded to the Astros in January 2018 and went on to have what was at the time the best year of his career, going 15-5 with a 2.88 ERA while permitting 143 hits and racking up 276 strikeouts over 200.1 frames.
But Cole has arguably been ever better this season, which should set him up for a major payday once free agency hits.
