The Ricketts family, who owns the Chicago Cubs, had made waves for their interest in purchasing Chelsea F.C. from Russian billionaire owner Roman Abramovich, who was forced to sell the club in the midst of sanctions resulting from Russia's invasion of Ukraine. However, the Cubs owners made a shocking decision on their bid following Thursday's deadline to submit an offer, as reported by Bloomberg UK.

A consortium led by the Ricketts family said it was withdrawing its bid to buy Chelsea Football Club, leaving only three groups in the race for the ownership of last season’s European champions. The Ricketts family, which came up against allegations of racism during the sales process that started in March, said Friday it became “increasingly clear that certain issues could not be addressed given the unusual dynamics around the sales process,” according to a text message.

The Ricketts family has shockingly decided to withdraw their bid for Chelsea F.C. Abramovich's club is reportedly worth as much as $2.4 billion. The Cubs owners' exit leaves three remaining bidders, part-Los Angeles Lakers owner Todd Boehly, British businessman Sir Martin Broughton, and Boston Celtics co-owner Steve Pagliuca.

Facing allegations of racism that arose in March, the Ricketts family released a statement in a text message, saying that “certain issues could not be addressed” surrounding the sales process of Chelsea F.C.

It will be interesting to see who emerges as the top suitor with the Cubs owners out of the running.
