The Shohei Ohtani sweepstakes are heating up after the report that he met with the Toronto Blue Jays. While several teams still believe they're in the mix for Ohtani, one team is losing faith in their chances to sign the superstar. The Chicago Cubs are no longer optimistic they can sign Ohtani, according to Bob Nightengale.

The Cubs were seen as a dark horse to land Ohtani this offseason and were in the mix when he was originally posted in 2017. They believe they'll again miss out on Ohtani's signature.

The candidates to sign Ohtani are narrowing down and with the Cubs out, the Blue Jays are left to battle the Los Angeles Dodgers, LA Angels and San Francisco Giants for the two-time MVP.

There is no confirmation as to whether the Cubs ever met with Ohtani or not, but it would probably have come out by now just as the Blue Jays news did Monday night. Ohtani is very much keeping things under wraps when it comes to his free agency, though it's unclear how deterred he is by the news being leaked.

Some expect Ohtani to make a decision this week as the Winter Meetings happen, though there are reports that he wants to meet with teams in person after the meetings. The Blue Jays may be the first but likely will not be the last team that hosts Ohtani for a visit.

The most anticipated free agency of all time is rolling along and Shohei Ohtani could decide his new team within a week. It looks like it won’t be the Cubs, who will now turn elsewhere in their offseason plans after striking out on Ohtani for a second time.
