The Houston Astros are dealing with a bit of locker room turmoil regarding manager Dusty Baker and outfielder Chas McCormick. Although McCormick has been having one of the best statistical seasons of his career thus far in 2023, the Astros fanbase has been up in arms recently about his perceived lack of playing time.
Some have speculated that Chas McCormick's weight may be a factor in Baker's thought process.
Baker recently addressed the controversy.
“As far as me not liking Chas, I don't understand where that's coming from at all,” said Baker, per Chandler Rome of The Athletic. “It's caused kind of a s–tstorm out there which is unnecessary, totally unnecessary. It seems like if somebody has something against me, they ought to use it against me and not use my players against me.”
Dusty Baker went on to reference McCormick's alleged weight struggles with the Astros.
“As far as his weight is concerned, if I had something against his weight… I wouldn't bring him banana pudding once a week. I stop by This Is It and get him banana pudding.”
The situation has hung a cloud over the Astros franchise as the team gears up to defend their 2022 World Series Championship title. The Astros currently sit in first place in the vaunted AL West, just a half-game over the Seattle Mariners and three games over the Texas Rangers.
While it won't be the winningest season in franchise history, things still appear to be humming along just fine on the diamond for the Astros.
The MLB playoffs begin in October.
