After three years of waiting, the Los Angeles Dodgers will unveil a commemorative statue of pitcher Sandy Koufax Saturday. The plans for the statue were originally announced in 2019  Koufax will be in attendance for the unveiling, and will be joined by current Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw.

The two pitchers share history as two of the greatest Dodgers to grace the mound, and will share the moment honoring Koufax. Kershaw gave his thoughts on Koufax and the unveiling, including some high praise for the Dodgers legend.

“When a rookie sees the statue,” Kershaw said, “I hope the veterans tell him that he was the best to ever do it.”

The “G.O.A.T” label can be thrown around lightly at times in sports, but Koufax is certainly deserving. The Hall of Famer and three-time Cy Young award winner played his entire 12 season career with the Dodgers, winning four World Series championships. His level of success in relatively short time makes his career one of the most remarkable in major league history. He was made the youngest Hall of Fame inductee in 1972.

Even for someone of Koufax's stature, the compliment from Kershaw is a huge one. A fellow Dodger lifer and future Hall of Famer, Kershaw matches Koufax in Cy Young awards plus a ring and a National League MVP award to boot. Both players are Los Angeles legends and some of the best pitchers of all time.

Koufax's statue will be unveiled outside Dodger stadium ahead of Saturday's game against the Cleveland Guardians, which begins at 4:15 PST.
