The Philadelphia Phillies have not gotten off to the start they were hoping for in the 2022 MLB season, and a recent injury update has only made matters worse for Joe Girardi and Co. After losing Jean Segura to a finger injury, the Phillies placed the veteran middle infielder on the Injured List. It seems he's set for a lengthy stay on the shelf, unfortunately, as Todd Zolecki reports the 32-year-old is expected to miss 10-12 weeks of action.
Jean Segura needs surgery on fractured right index finger. He will miss 10-12 weeks. Huge blow for the #Phillies offense and defense. Maybe back in September.

That's a huge blow for the Phillies, who will now be without one of their most reliable players, both offensively and defensively, for the better part of three months. He picked up the injury in the Phillies loss to San Francisco on Tuesday.
Article Continues BelowWith Segura set for an extended stay on the sidelines, Johan Camargo, Nick Maton, and Bryson Stott are expected to fill in for the veteran. Prior to the injury, Segura was slashing .275/.324/.407 with 6 home runs, 19 RBI, 22 runs, and 8 stolen bases. The second baseman was a key cog in the Phillies' setup, and his absence will be a significant loss.
At 21-29, the Phillies are in desperate need of a turnaround, and fast. Segura's injury will reduce the chances of that, and further heat up Girardi's seat amid calls for his ousting from impatient fans. The team is underperforming as is, so they'll need to hope Maton and Stott can help pick up some of the slack in Segura's stead.
Maton was called up from Triple-A Lehigh following the injury to Segura as a corresponding roster move, alongside left-hander Christopher Sanchez. In addition to placing Segura on the IL, the Phillies designated Roman Quinn for assignment.
