Bo Bichette has been out of the Toronto Blue Jays lineup since early September after the team placed him on the IL due to a knee injury. With the World Series set to begin on Friday night, reports indicate that the veteran infielder could be returning for the championship series. Manager John Schneider revealed some potential roles Bichette could play upon returning.
The 45-year-old manager claims that Bo Bichette could play second base, shortstop, or designated hitter for the Blue Jays during the World Series, according to baseball columnist Shi Davidi. However, Schneider does hint that the two-time All-Star is still not fully cleared to play just yet.
“Blue Jays manager John Schneider says Bo Bichette continues to hit, run, take groundballs. ‘He's feeling good, but still a few boxes to check.' Leaves open all usage possibilities, including SS, 2B, and DH.”
From the sounds of it, Bichette, who is 27 years old, is questionable for Friday's contest. The Blue Jays star very well could make his return for Game 1 of the World Series, but it largely depends on how he performs in his workouts leading up to the contest, per Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
“Bo Bichette is a candidate for 2B, SS or DH, depending a bit on how today's workout goes, Jays manager John Schneider said.”
Before falling to the knee injury, Bichette was playing incredibly well. Through the 139 games he played, the star infielder owned a .311 batting average (tied career high) and .357 OBP while recording 181 hits, 18 home runs, and 94 RBIs.
If he is able to return to action by Friday, then the Blue Jays would likely be getting a big boost to the lineup. Game 1 of the World Series begins on Friday at 8 p.m. EST. It will be taking place in Toronto, giving the Blue Jays a home-field advantage against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
