On Tuesday night, the New Orleans Pelicans made waves in the NBA world by winning the 2019 NBA Draft Lottery — giving the team a chance to select Zion Williamson in June’s NBA Draft.

The last time New Orleans won the lottery, they selected Anthony Davis, which turned out well for a time. However, the team was troubled by poor management and a lack of focus in the front office.

Now, the team has David Griffin as its steadfast General Manager. Griffin has already claimed that he is aiming to convince disgruntled star Davis to remain a member of the Pelicans, and he is also innately brilliant at winning the lottery.

In four of his last five trips to the lottery, Griffin got the top pick for his team — in 2011, 2013 and 2014 all for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Now, Griffin and Co. have a chance to select No.1 again.

How does Griffin do it? Well, it could very well be a lucky tie from Cavaliers’ administrator Jeff Cohen.

As you can hear, Griffin trusts that “there is no such thing as a lucky totem,” but he wanted the tie all the same to help sway the odds in his favor.

Whatever he did worked wonders, as the Pelicans zoomed up the draft board six spots and took control of the No.1 pick from the New York Knicks, who were the odds-on favorite to pick first.
