This season will have a new format for the 2018 All-Star Game, with a draft taking place before the weekend’s festivities. It will have the two team captains, who are the top vote-getters of each conference, selecting their teammates from appointed All-Stars. Since it is a new way of determining who takes part in the annual event, it has increased the intrigue from the fans who want to have a better understanding of how it works.

However, the draft may not even be televised, as the NBA may opt to keep it a secret process instead. It may not be the most popular of choices for the league to make, but as it stands, it’s still possible that it could be the path they’ll choose, which was recently discussed by the crew of ESPN’s The Jump.

Over the past few years, the All-Star selection process has been very controversial, as there have been a number of “snubs” who were not named to either team because of the fan votes. It has somewhat become a popularity contest as well, and the honor is not solely given to players who are playing well in a particular season. That said, the NBPA, together with team owners, decided to makes some changes to the process, resulting in the draft.

It’s still unclear if the NBA will make it secret process or not, but if it won’t be televised for the fans to watch, it can be expected that it will be a much talked about topic again. The fans have been very vocal about wanting to be part of it, and should the league ultimately decide to secretly have the draft, the public will most likely voice out their dismay and could force some more changes to be made again in 2019.
