NBA commissioner Adam Silver gave an explanation as to why the league won't reduce its schedule.

The answer is simple and exactly what you'd expect: money. With just a 12-game decrease (from 82 games to 70 games), there would be a 20 percent pay cut to everyone.

By everyone, you can assume that would Silver means front-office executives, coaching staff and players.

It's safe to assume none of them would be too happy with that.

The NBA has been discussing shortening the schedule for a while now. It's been all about workload for players, which actually recently saw the season get longer (not in games). The year starts earlier now, with the idea that it will completely stop back-to-back-to-backs and severely limit back-to-backs.

However, that hasn't changed the fact that every team plays 82 games and teams that make it to the finals can play over 100 games when all is said and done.

This is something the NBA is going to keep an eye on. The discussion will continue to rage on as they try to figure out exactly how to make everyone happy.

It's pretty obvious that a 20 percent pay cut isn't the way to go, however. No one would be happy with a slightly smaller workload leading to such a massive difference in their wallets.
