Nike is currently in its first year as the official uniform provider for the NBA. Now, interesting news has come out on who chooses the uniforms the teams wear. Usually, teams wear white uniforms at home with dark uniforms on the road with the players even deciding on some occasions.

However, according to an article by Steve Bulpett for the Boston Herald, Nike controls all 30 teams' uniforms for every game. They follow a schedule and have no input on what they can wear.

“The league gives us a master schedule,” said Celtics travel and equipment coordinator John Connor. “We put it on the wall and we just give out what’s on the wall. We get the schedule and what we’re supposed to wear from the league, and it’s for the whole year.

Ever wondered why a certain team is wearing the selected uniform on a given night? Well, it all seems to point that Nike is making the official call and will even call about what color tights players can wear.

“They changed the tight colors, too,” said Connor. “Nike will call out, like, they want green tights with the green uniforms or white tights with green uniforms, black tights on white. They actually script for like 50 percent of the games what everything has to be. It’s a lot more restrictive.”

With the number of uniform options each team has, it is making it even harder for the Celtics equipment manager as he travels along with the team.

“I used to travel with 15 bags, and now we’re easily up to 25 or 30 now. That includes basketballs and practice gear and all that stuff. But it’s at least seven or eight more bags just for uniforms now.”

It is interesting to see how much control Nike has in this situation as this is their first year in the NBA. Will Nike lighten up down the road and let teams choose the selected uniform in the near future? Let's wait and see.
