The COVID-19 pandemic has been tough on everybody, including the NBA. As financial struggles loomed over the globe this past year, league officials are apparently seriously considering adding two more expansion teams to assuage the economic losses. One guy who seems in favor of it is not exactly in the NBA, but he sure knows his sports: Patrick Mahomes.

The Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback is low-key egging on his city to join the NBA. The reigning Super Bowl MVP tweeted a one-emoji reaction to the news of the NBA possibly expanding.

The past year has been very challenging for the NBA to say the least. The league was forced to resume the 2019-20 season inside a billion-dollar bubble tournament in Orlando, Florida, where zero in-arena revenues were earned. Fan interest has also dipped, with the NBA Finals between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Miami Heat having a 51 percent decline in ratings.

As Mahomes might have deduced, adding two new teams should be a welcome development. The franchise fee for new squads, which is currently projected at $2.5 billion each, will put money directly to the NBA and could alleviate any potential revenue-based crisis.

Late last year, the Utah Jazz was purchased for $1.6 billion while currently, the Minnesota Timberwolves have been getting different offers in the $1.5 billion range. Both figures are at least $1 billion away from the average number.

If the NBA does decide to open up the gates, then Mahomes' Kansas City would definitely be a viable option. The city actually had a team in the NBA in the 1970s before the Kansas City Kings became the Sacramento Kings.

The Chiefs, through the help of Patrick Mahomes, have dominated the NFL in the past few years and it would be interesting to see Kansas City try to put a competitive NBA crew to represent the state of Missouri.
