The USA men's national basketball team will be heading to China this August to compete in the FIBA World Cup. However, Gregg Popovich, Steve Kerr and Co. are not going to go there just to try to win the title.

In an interview with ESPN's Brian Windhorst, Popovich said it is important for the people of America to be united right now, and he wants the national team to lead by example.

“We can't fix the divisiveness in our country, but what we can do is be a great example of how people come together for a common goal and achieve it,” the San Antonio Spurs and Team USA head coach quipped.

Kerr, Team USA's assistant coach, echoed the same sentiments. The Golden State Warriors champion coach emphasized that Team USA has a great opportunity to inspire and do “something unifying.”

“I watched the women's World Cup team win the World Cup and it was inspiring,” Kerr shared. To me that's what sports are about, the competition and the unity. Bringing out this great spirit and energy with the fans. We have a chance to do something that is very positive and unifying.”

Both Gregg Popovich and Steve Kerr have been known to be very vocal when it comes to political issues surrounding the country, but they refused to answer any questions related to politics during the first day of Team USA's training camp. Instead, they used the opportunity to urge fans and players alike to stay united and one.

Team USA has suffered a great blow with the withdrawal of the top NBA players. However, the coaches are undoubtedly not concerned about it. They are leading by example, and they are off to a good start.
