The Boston Celtics have been in need of a roster mix-up for a while now. With only a little over a week left before the trade deadline, time is running out for them.

Boston has made it clear that they won't be engaging in any franchise-shattering deals like trading away Jayson Tatum or Jaylen Brown. Instead, they are looking to tweak their roster around the edges and move players like Dennis Schroder and Josh Richardson.

According to The Athletic's Jared Weiss, Boston offered Richardson and a young player to the Timberwolves in exchange for Malik Beasley. Minnesota declined the offer.

Boston explored a deal that would send Josh Richardson and one of either Romeo Langford and Aaron Nesmith to Minnesota for Malik Beasley, but Minnesota was not interested at the time as they sought to maintain flexibility for bigger moves at the deadline, sources told both myself and The Athletic’s Jon Krawczynski.

Beasley would provide a scoring boost to a Celtics team that needs it. Boston's offense is below average in terms of scoring efficiency and 3-point shooting. The Timberwolves would have gotten a strong defender and a flyer on a former first-round pick. The Wolves could use a defensive boost to get their defense back to being one of the best in the NBA.

The Timberwolves have their sights set on an improved frontcourt partner for Karl-Anthony Towns. They also have an interest in acquiring Marcus Smart from the Celtics. A trade involving Smart, though, would cost more than just one of their reserves. Depending on what the trade market looks like, the Celtics and Wolves may head back to the drawing board and strike a deal.
