After he retires from the NBA following the conclusion of the 2019-20 season, Atlanta Hawks veteran small forward Vince Carter is going to venture off into the NBA media game.
Carter says he likes coaching, but doesn't want to be a coach due to the lack of loyalty teams show coaches. Instead, the Hawks swingman is going to spread his basketball knowledge through the media:
“I like coaching the game but I don’t want to coach,” Carter told Sports Illustrated's Jacob Feldman. “There’s no loyalty in my opinion to coaches. But I can be a coach on air, helping viewers understand what they’re seeing or how we see it as professional players.
“Because of me sticking around on the basketball side, I understand the approach and what it takes. Doing it this way got me to 22 years in the NBA so why not take that approach and learn along the way, just like I did then. I didn’t know 30 years ago how to go about what I really wanted to accomplish. I studied, asked questions, and learned. I’m doing the same things now, mirroring that step-by-step approach.
“I did Sportscaster U seven years ago. I wanted to see if I liked it—and I loved it. From there I did what I had to do, getting as many reps as I could, doing games, studio work, and sidelines.”
Vince Carter has been on ESPN's “The Jump” a few times and has announced Summer League, among other games. He really seems to have a knack for the media business.
For now, though, Carter is still an NBA player. He will try to help the Hawks make the playoffs next season. It would be nice to see Carter play in the postseason one final time before he retires from basketball.
