Aside from the wild free agency, another move to watch out for is contract extensions of the 2018-19 draft class. For his part, Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young seems to be taking the first step in that regard.
According to Sam Amick and Jeff Schultz of The Athletic, Young is set to sign a five-year, $170 million deal. It has a “supermax trigger” that could push the amount to $201.5 million. Atlanta execs will meet with Trae in LA on Monday night to get the deal done.
The Hawks and guard Trae Young are expected to finalize terms on a max contract shortly after midnight, a source told The Athletic. The NBA technically doesn't allow extensions of rookie deals until after midnight.
The extension, however, didn't come as a surprise. Besides, there is no way the Hawks would let Trae Young even have doubts about his place in the Atlanta franchise after leading the team to the Eastern Conference Finals in his first playoff appearance.
Young showed the swagger and confidence of being a franchise player, and now, he is getting paid like one.
While he was not selected in the 2021 All-Star game, he proved to the whole NBA that he is a true superstar that can be a threat to any team. With his extension, the Hawks are now assured to have their main guy for the next five years.
UPDATE: Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN confirmed that Trae Young is signing a five-year extension with the Hawks. However, it is for the designated rookie maximum extension worth $207 million.
