The Boston Celtics are one of the two main teams taking their best shot at trading for Kawhi Leonard, after reports of the San Antonio Spurs being “fully engaged” with several teams in potentially making a deal for him.
Though the front office is wary of plenty of things — among them, his desire to remain in Boston long-term, his recent injury and the incertitude regarding his bill of health moving forward, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.
Though there's always two sides to a story.
While Wojnarowski's initial report indicates the Spurs have ramped up their interest in trading Leonard (later followed by caution that Spurs are only doing their due diligence by listening), local reporter Adam Kaufman of WBZ News Radio warned that trade talks were “miles away, no offers made.”
Article Continues BelowIt seems the consensus is that all teams are at an exploratory point, but the Spurs are at least willing to listen and no longer hellbent on keeping their star and solving issues in-house, as previously portrayed.
The Celtics have by far the best available assets to bundle for Leonard, whether it is through current contracts or future picks bundled for a top-five talent.
The Spurs still hold out some level of hope to fix things internally and get to a point in which they can mend fences with Leonard and feel comfortable to offer a supermax extension worth a whopping $219 million over five years.
The money is the most any team can offer, as well as the length of the contract, but Leonard's happiness and sense of trust is expected to take utmost priority in his decision before anything else.
