Boston Celtics head coach Brad Stevens was extremely complimentary of the Celtics rookie guards on Tuesday, heaping praise on both Carsen Edwards and Tremont Waters. Stevens called Waters ‘savvy' and noticed that he was quickly adapting to the NBA game.

Waters spent two years at LSU, impressing in both campaigns. In his sophomore season, he averaged 15.3 points, 5.8 assists, and a whopping 2.8 steals per game. He shot an efficient 43 percent from the floor and 33 percent from the three-point line. The Celtics were impressed enough that they selected him with the 51st overall pick.

Even though he has shown he is a decent scorer, Waters calling card is his ferocious defense. In college, he was an elite perimeter defender, as evidenced by his 2.8 steals per game. He is just as good at picking off lazy passes as he is at anticipating a bad dribble and swiping it away.

This defensive profile fits the Celtics mantra perfectly. The team is known for employing defenders that can do it all on the defensive end. Marcus Smart has always been regarded as one of the better defenders in the league, and former Celtic Al Horford was a defensive anchor.

It seems like the Celtics were the perfect landing spot for Waters. He will get the chance to hone his defensive talent even further and sop up some point guard minutes behind Kemba Walker.
