There's a chance Boston Celtics star Kyrie Irving will miss their game with the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday after suffering a scratched eye against the San Antonio Spurs.
Kyrie Irving picked up the injury midway through the fourth quarter of the game after accidentally receiving an elbow from Spurs forward Marco Belinelli. The Celtics All-Star guard was running to the rim in an attempt to get the rebound, but he ended up having a scratched cornea.
However, while the 26-year-old point guard eventually finished the game despite the injury, the Celtics are being cautious about his condition and listed him as questionable to play when they take on the Timberwolves at TD Garden.
#NEBHInjuryReport for tomorrow vs. Minnesota:
Aron Baynes (left fourth metacarpal fracture) – OUT
Kyrie Irving (right eye irritation) – QUESTIONABLE
Rob Williams (left groin strain) – OUT— Boston Celtics (@celtics) January 1, 2019
Irving is leading Boston in scoring with 23.1 points per game, so his possible absence will certainly be a massive blow to a team that is still trying to find some consistency. Irving also boasts season averages of 4.9 rebounds, 6.6 assists and 1.6 steals.
The injury to the former Cleveland Cavaliers star also comes at the wrong time. Irving is on a tear offensively, and it's a little unfortunate that he could be sidelined.
Over the last 10 games, Irving averaged 26.2 points, 5.5 boards, 7.2 assists and 1.7 steals. His best performance, perhaps, was his 40-point explosion in the Celtics' 121-114 victory against the Philadelphia 76ers.
