The Boston Celtics and point guard Terry Rozier will not come to an agreement on a contract extension prior to Monday’s deadline, according to Adam Himmelsbach of The Boston Globe. Rozier will make $3 million this season and become a restricted free agent in the summer of 2019 if Boston offers him a $4.29 million qualifying offer.

Per the report, Rozier is determined to become a starting point guard in the NBA. The 24-year-old, who started for the Celtics in the 2018 playoffs, will be the backup point guard again this season with star Kyrie Irving back in the lineup.
In 19 games during the Celtics’ postseason run last season, Rozier averaged 16.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 5.7 assists per game while shooting 40.6 percent from the field and 34.7 percent from beyond the arc. It wouldn't make financial sense for Rozier to sign an extension now, as he can make much more money by entering the open market. Rozier is reportedly looking to make $20 million per season.
Irving recently informally announced he is planning on re-signing with the Celtics next offseason. The five-time All-Star will command a max contract. The Celtics are paying both Gordon Hayward and Al Horford max money, and they will have to take care of Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum in a few years. That could make Rozier the odd man out in Boston.
