Kawhi Leonard being sent to the Toronto Raptors was one of the biggest blockbuster transactions this summer. But what if he went to the Boston Celtics? News reveals that the Celtics offered its picks for the defensive stalwart.
ESPN's Zach Lowe, speaking on his podcast, said that the Celtics wanted to remain relevant and stay in the playoffs. With Danny Ainge as general manager, the Celtics have been host to several trade deals and free agency signings throughout the last several years.
“Rebuilding was just not going to be an option there. They want to remain ‘relevant', I think is the word that has been used. They want to remain in the playoff race. They just weren't going to consider offers that were heavy on draft picks and young players.
Lowe added that the Celtics didn't just add their own picks. They also included picks from the other teams that they have the rights to:
“And by the way, as all the reporting from this sort of trickled in, I think the Celtics offered most of their best draft picks. I don't think the Celtics just offered (and said) ‘You could have a bunch of our picks.' I think some of the picks they're owed, at least two of the picks, if not all of them that they own from other teams, including the Kings, Grizzlies and Clippers. I think those were all in the deal.”
What if Leonard went to the Celtics? Would it be enough to for them to dominate the East? We can only fantasize at this point. But take note that Leonard only has one year left in his contract. His stint with the Raptors could be just a one-year rental.
