After seeing John Wall knock down a clutch three-pointer to give the Washington Wizards the lead in Game 6 of their second round playoff series, Isaiah Thomas knew he still had the opportunity to tie or even win the match as there were still 3.5 seconds left on the clock.
On the ensuing play, the C's tried to inbound the ball to Kelly Olynyk under the basket, but was quickly fouled. Instead of the game clock stopping at 2.7 seconds, it ran down to 1.7 seconds, making it more difficult for them to score. Thomas was forced to shoot a contested three-pointer, which he missed, as he had less time to work with.
The NBA's Last 2 Minute Report also admits that there should have been an extra second for the Celtics, but the game officials missed it. When asked about what he feels knowing he could've had more time to try and come up with a better shot, Thomas shared that an extra dribble could have been the difference for him to have a clearer shot than what he had to take.
Thomas has moved past that and has already accepted their loss, before adding, via Chris Forsberg of ESPN, that he and his teammates are now focused on Game 7.
“I could take another dribble. I could have got past [Markieff] Morris, probably. A little bit, got a little bit more separation,” Thomas said after Boston's off-day practice on Sunday. “It is what it is. We can't worry about that. It just sucks that they came out with it and said we should have had another second.”
With the winner-take-all match happening on Monday, Thomas is showing a lot of maturity by not dwelling on what happened in their previous game. He has the right mindset to focus on the task at hand and win at home in Game 7. The Boston faithful are hoping that the controversial incident will not cause a distraction to their players, but rather serve as extra motivation to beat the Wizards and advance to the conference finals.
